Post-Micturition Dribble (PMD)

A few drops escaping just after urinating.

Very common in men: a little urine stays in the lower part of the urethra because the pelvic floor muscles do not expel the last drops.

The emptying technique

Before getting dressed, press gently with three fingers behind the scrotum, pushing upwards and forwards. This releases the urine left in the urethra and avoids stains.

More Informations

Drops after urinating: common, harmless and improvable.

Definition

Post-micturition dribble is the loss of a few drops of urine just after urinating, once dressed again. It mainly concerns men, sometimes women.

Causes

In men, a little urine stays in the lower part of the urethra and flows out afterwards. In women, urine can pool in the vagina or a small urethral diverticulum.

Diagnosis

  • The description of symptoms is usually enough.
  • Flow measurement or imaging if another cause is suspected.

Treatments

In men, a gentle massage behind the scrotum at the end of urination helps empty the urethra. For everyone, strengthening the pelvic floor improves expulsion. A thin pad keeps things discreet.

Nateen advice

Dribbling after urination is common in men and stains underwear. The Men guard, a thin anatomical male pad, absorbs it discreetly all day.
